Alan Doyle— actor, producer, best-selling author, and best-known as lead singer for Newfoundland’s
beloved Great Big Sea these past 20+ years— hardly needs an introduction. With five solo albums under
his belt, Doyle has been touring the world with his ace six-piece band for the last decade. In late 2014,
Doyle released his best-selling memoir Where I Belong, followed by A Newfoundlander In Canada

“The Elders” remain one of the top Celtic-rock bands in the U-S after 24 years because of their timeless sound. It’s their passion, great melodies, unique harmonies, unparalleled musicianship and strong song-writing that keeps them connected.

And that songwriting began in 1998 when two musicians moved back from L.A. to Kansas City to play Irish music. Norm Dahlor and Brent Hoad, played in numerous bands but their American and Celtic-folk rock roots were calling and The Elders were born.

Their most recent studio album, number 9, “Well Alright Then”, released in March, was conceived after the band retired and the country experienced a lockdown. The band had not intended on recording again but did so in honor of guitarist Steve Phillips, who urged them to finish the album. Phillips recorded all of his vocals and musical parts before he passed in 2020.

“Well Alright Then”, their 9th album, includes the unique story-telling the band is well-known for, with stories of love, loyalty and Irish feistiness.

From an Emmy-Award Winning DVD, to an induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame and to a PBS concert televised across the U-S, The Elders are still going strong because of their powerful, personal and musical chemistry.

There are many reasons to be excited about new Glasgow-based five- piece Ímar – not least a line-up featuring current and former members of Mànran, RURA, Talisk, Barrule and Cara whose collectively crammed trophy-cabinet includes the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Musician of the Year, 2016 Radio Scotland Musician of the Year, BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and several All-Britain & All-Ireland titles. By far the best and biggest reason, however, is how excited the band are themselves. “As soon as we all sat down to play together properly, it just worked,” says bodhrán player Adam Brown (RURA), originally from Suffolk. “We were a bit stunned, to be honest; all looking round at everyone else,
thinking, ‘Is it just me, or was that really good?’” “It’s definitely more of a pure-drop trad sound than most of the other bands we’re involved in,” adds Cork-born uilleann piper, flautist and whistle player Ryan Murphy (Mànran), “but I think that’s partly why it feels so natural. We’re going back to the music we started out playing – which is ultimately the reason why we’re all here as musicians.” Ímar’s formation also embodies a more personal reconnection with its members’ formative years, dating back long before their recent camaraderie around Glasgow’s justly celebrated session scene. All five of them – also including fiddler Tomás Callister and bouzouki ace Adam Rhodes (Barrule), both from the Isle of Man, plus Glasgow native Mohsen Amini (Talisk) on concertina – originally met as teenagers through Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the Irish traditional music network that tutors budding players throughout the British Isles and beyond, and stages the annual schedule of Fleadh competitions.

“We all have a really strong shared background in Irish music – even though we all live in Glasgow, and only Ryan’s actually from Ireland,” Brown says. These foundations underpin many of Ímar’s distinctive qualities, in both instrumentation and material, while also highlighting the cyclical evolution of Scotland’s wider folk scene. Go back a couple of decades or so, and Irish repertoire still predominated at many Scottish sessions and gigs, whereas today Ímar’s sound stands out boldly from the crowd. Brown adds. “In a way, sometimes it’s easier to get people’s attention by doing something a bit weird, whereas properly nailing a set of good tunes, really well, is actually pretty hard.” And all the more so when you’re playing at the level that these five virtuosos have reached, as Amini observes: “This is one band where you definitely have to be on your game.”

The 2023 line-up for Denver shows will introduce Caoimhín Ó Fearghail who plays traditional Irish music on guitar, flute, uilleann pipes, bouzouki and vocals. Caoimhín (Kweevin) , who is from the Gaeltacht area of Co. Waterford, has toured extensively in the U.S. and around the world with Caladh Nua and Danú; Caitríona Sherlock, a talented young singer from Monaghan, who has won two All-Ireland singing titles and appears frequently alongside Ireland’s leading instrumentalists and orchestras. Caitríona brings to Irish Christmas in America a magical voice and stage presence, invoking the warmth and charm of an Irish Christmas evening; Seán Gavin from group Bau will warm the room with his ornate and driving style on the flute and uilleann pipes (also flute); Gráinne Hambly from County Mayo in the West of Ireland is an internationally recognized exponent of the Irish harp; Samantha Harvey on piano and Irish dance; and (Producer) Oisín Mac Diarmada on fiddle.

Celtic Events is delighted to keep the tradition alive with “IRISH CHRISTMAS IN AMERICA-The Show” Saturday December 16 th, 2023, for two All Ages shows at the Soiled Dove in Denver. The hugely popular Irish Christmas in America show, is back for a 18th season, celebrating the Holidays with an Irish twist. Produced by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, the show features top Irish music, song and dance in an engaging performance. The 2023 tour will introduce Caoimhín Ó Fearghail plays traditional Irish music on guitar, flute, uilleann pipes, bouzouki and vocals – from the Gaeltacht area of Co. Waterford Caoimhín (Kweevin) has toured extensively in the U.S. and around the world with Caladh Nua and Danú; Caitríona Sherlock, a talented young singer from Monaghan, who has won two All-Ireland singing titles and appears frequently alongside Ireland’s leading instrumentalists and orchestras. Caitríona brings to Irish Christmas in America a magical voice and stage presence, invoking the warmth and charm of an Irish Christmas evening; Seán Gavin from group Bau will warm the room with his ornate and driving style on the flute and uilleann pipes (also flute); Gráinne Hambly from County Mayo in the West of Ireland is an internationally recognized exponent of the Irish harp; Samantha Harvey on piano and Irish dance; and Oisín Mac Diarmada on fiddle. “One of the most heartfelt themes of Irish Christmas is emigration,” says Mac Diarmada. “Music was a way that people stayed close to home.” A sparkling tradition among holiday events, Irish Christmas in America is a special family-friendly show for the season. Gather your family and friends early as this Irish Christmas tradition has historically sold out back-to-back past performances in Colorado. The Soiled Dove is located at 7401 E. 1st Ave Denver. Parking is free and food will available upstairs at the Tavern at Lowry before each show. Doors for both shows will open an hour before show time.

One of the greatest fiddlers of this or any generation, Kevin Burke is known far and wide, a legend in traditional Irish music. His bow has driven the Bothy Band, Patrick Street, Open House and Celtic Fiddle Festival. He was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship in the US, and in Ireland the prestigious Gradam Ceoil Award. His solo performances of flawless unaccompanied fiddle, delivered with humorous stories of the tunes and their makers, are an absolute delight. Kevin’s easy and welcoming manner leaves the audience feeling like privileged guests, and with a richer understanding of this great tradition. Whatever context, band or solo, Kevin Burke’s fiddle is a dynamic melodic force, the voice of the master.
Kevin will be accompanied on stage by Nuala Kennedy on flutes, whistles, vocals and Eamon O’Leray an guitar, bouzouki, vocals. Band members include Cork-born uilleann piper, flautist and whistle player Ryan Murphy (Mànran); Bodhrán player Adam Brown (RURA), originally from Suffolk; Fiddler Tomás Callister and bouzouki ace Adam Rhodes (Barrule), both from the Isle of Man; Glasgow native Mohsen Amini (Talisk) on concertina. Kolacny Music Closed but some music services still offered form Englewood Home
Kolacny Music at 1900 S. Broadway, Denver,CO closed in September 2023, after 93 years in business. Since 1930, the family run business has offered musical instruments for sale and other service including rental and repair of band and orchestra instruments. Overtime many local music programs have declined, creating a substantial loss of revenue. Kolancy was hit hard by the prolonged Covid closures. David and wife Debra felt pressured to take a sizable loan, secured by their home, to sustain the store. At that point the business was not financially viable, so when local businessmen made a fair offer on the Kolacny building, the hard decision was made to close the doors.
While many of Kolany Music customers mourn the loss of the friendly and community minded family store, there is some good news. David Kolacny, who is one of the top harp experts in the country, and Debra will offer a number of music services from their home in Englewood. Student harp rentals and sheet music will be available along with Pedal & Lever harp regulations, minor repairs and installing sharping levers. Also, the couple has warehoused a large quantity of band instruments to help provide support for current school music programs.
