Switchback with the Big Ol’ Band– “Birds of Prey’ Album Release Party
Friday August 9, at Soiled Dove Underground
Switchback, the award-winning duo of Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack have chosen one of their favorite places for their “Birds of Prey” Album Release Party Friday, August 9. “We have been playing out in Colorado for over 20 years now, and I played almost every corner of the state,” said FitzGerald, “Having the chance to play at the Soiled Dove is particularly great for us as we love the intimacy of the room. Having witnessed some great shows there, it’s exciting to know that we’re going to take the stage”. McCormack added, “Love playing out in Colorado. There’s a lot of great talent that lives and plays in the state, and so, it is particularly gratifying that we have a great following. We’ve even had a stray brown bear to crash some of our outdoor concerts in the past. I don’t expect that to happen on August 9, but what I do expect to happen is that our audience in Denver is going to be treated to the full band sound. Brian and I intend to open the evening. We hope that satisfies the Switchback purists who love the duo and the stomp boards. We’re known as the “two guys that sound like eight“.
When the “two guys that sound like eight“ take to the stage with their “Big Ol’ Band” at “the Dove”, they are bound to sound as big as twelve. The talented performer Joining the duo include Nick Hirka of Decorah Iowa, on percussion; Paul Russell (Brian’s nephew) Brookfield Illinois on fiddle, mandolin, 12 string guitar, acoustic guitar; Amanda Crumley, from Denver, playing guitar and back up locals; Karen Savarese of Aurora Colorado, playing woodwinds. All the ingredients for an epic concert!
Based in Chicago, Switchback draws on traditional Celtic music and original Americana songs that reflect their Irish heritage and Midwestern roots. Playing an exciting mix of mandolin, guitar, and bass, their harmonies have won them comparisons to famous duos, such as the Louvin Brothers, Everly Brothers, & Simon and Garfunkel. Music Connection Magazine said: “The words ‘American Roots & Celtic Soul’ only begin to describe this unusual act, whose vocal prowess is as pure as it is unique. There is no denying the stunning vocal blends that are achieved by this duo.”
Their Celtic music is authentically Irish, drawing praise from such traditional players as Matt Molloy of the group the Chieftains. Ireland has taken Switchback to her heart, with performances at art centers throughout the country and appearances on RTE (Raidió Teilifís Éireann). At the same time, their music is modern Celtic, with songs capturing the Irish of today as accurately as the Pogues and singer-songwriters like Christy Moore. But to pay attention only to the Celtic side of Switchback would be a disservice to the unique American roots music crafted by FitzGerald and McCormack. None other than the Grammy Award-winning producer Lloyd Maines chose to work with Switchback in producing three of their albums and considers the duo one of the most important acts playing Americana music today.
Switchback tours throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands playing over 200 engagements a year. Their television specials “The Americana Sessions”, “The Celtic Sessions” and “Music on the Mayne Stage” have aired on PBS stations throughout the U.S. The band has also been working with Paul Mertens (who arranged the music for “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin”) on orchestral scores for some of their original music.
The “Big Picture”mission for Switchback is playing music for those who need it most, in prisons, special need homes, schools, juvenile detention centers, and nursing facilities that set them apart from their peers. As the creator of the National Poetry Slam and author Marc Smith said, “Switchback hits an everybody note”.
