Ceili Time at the Irish Snug!
Free dance classes at the Irish Snug (downstairs)
Wednesdays 7pm until 8 ish
Martin Percival is starting a community ceili class at the Irish Snug every Wednesday evening (7pm) starting July 10th 2019. All are welcome! No experience necessary. Below is a Q & A with world –renowned Irish dancer, instructor, and founder of Irish Dance theatre, Martin Percival:
Q: What is Ceili?
A: Ceili is a type of Irish Dance. It is a fun, social type dance for any number of people.
Q: how do you pronounce it?
A: phonetically Kay-lee
Q: is it difficult to learn?
A: No! It’s similar to square dancing or country dancing and can be learned by anyone!
Q: What if I have two left feet, no coordination etc. will I be able to pick it up?
A: Very likely! The basics will be covered in the first 15-20 minutes of class. Each dance will also be walked through slowly and then danced to various tempos so everyone can get the hang of it.
Q: Do I need special shoes?
A: No! Any shoes will do but it is recommended that any soft shoe dance shoe can be worn. If tennis shoes are being worn, preferably ones that aren’t too ‘grippy’. You will likely want to dress in something comfortable that you can move in and that includes the shoes.
Q: Do I need a partner?
A: Nope. Dancers can join any group that is dancing, the instructor will pair people off or put the dancers into various groups.
Q: Can I bring friends?
A: Absolutely! The more, the merrier.
Q: Do I have to be Irish?
A: Not in the slightest! Any ethnicity is welcome.
Q: Is it for both men and women?
A: Yes! A fun time to be had by all!
Q: How different is it from other forms of Irish Dance?
A: It is one branch of the Irish Dance family. It is by far the easiest to master and can be a huge amount of fun to learn
Q: Is the class aerobic? Can I burn calories?
A: yes! It obviously depends on how much you do but between 250-500 have been reported!
Q: How much does it cost? Do I have to come every week?
A: It is free to join! Tips are greatly appreciated for the instructor but not necessary. Classes are drop in when you want.
Q: Will I be expected to dance for the whole class? And how long is the class?
A: Totally up to you! You can learn one dance or all of them. We will generally start with the more basic dances and progress from there. But all dances will be ‘called’ by the instructor so just show up and take it at your own pace. Depending on the number of people at the class it will run 1 hour plus. 7-8 ish
The purpose of the ceili class is to celebrate an aspect of the Irish culture that has traditionally been done in a social setting. The pub in Ireland is also the community center in some villages and it is where friends come to gather, socialize, dance, drink and catch up.
It is a perfect place for both beginners and more experienced dancers to come together to keep this beautiful tradition alive!
